Welcome to Beilngries

Welcome to Beilngries, a charming "pearl of the Altmühl Valley". Located in the heart of Bavaria, this historic town perfectly blends medieval architecture with the lush, rolling landscapes of the Altmühltal Nature Park.

A glimpse into history

Beilngries boasts over 1,000 years of history, first mentioned in official records in 1007. The town flourished as a strategic trading post under the Prince-Bishops of Eichstätt. As you walk through the town centre, you will see the preserved medieval town walls and nine remaining watchtowers. High above the town is Hirschberg Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in the region, which has served as everything from a count's residence to a Rococo hunting lodge.

Description and your stay

The town is characterised by its colourful facades, wide market squares and traditional "Jurahäuser" (Jura-style houses) with their characteristic limestone roofs.

Whether you are looking for a cosy holiday apartment (Ferienwohnung) in the historic centre or a spacious holiday villa on the outskirts, Beilngries offers a variety of accommodation options. You can find modern apartments overlooking the Altmühl River or luxury villas with private gardens and saunas. Many visitors choose a local guesthouse (Gasthof) to stay right above a traditional brewery, while others prefer the independence of a self-catering holiday home tucked away near the forest edge.

Typical food and drink

Beilngries is a paradise for lovers of hearty Bavarian-Franconian cuisine.

Altmühltaler Lamb: A regional speciality from sheep grazing on the local juniper heaths.

Beilngrieser Zwiebelrostbraten: Roast beef topped with a mountain of crispy fried onions.

Sausage specialties: Try Wollwurst or the classic Bayerischer Wurstsalat (marinated sausage salad).

Local beers: The city has a rich brewing tradition. Don't miss a glass of dark beer from the Schattenhofer Brewery or a wheat beer from the nearby Gutmann.

Festivals and culture

The city comes alive with traditional "Volksfeste" and seasonal festivities:

Zwiebelmarkt (Onion Market): This is the city's most famous festival, held every October, and celebrates all things onion-related, with crafts, food and music.

Altstadtfest: A summer highlight, where the streets of the old town are transformed into a giant open-air party with live bands and local delicacies.

Beilngrieser Volksfest: A classic Bavarian market in September with beer tents, rides and traditional costumes.
